What they do

Retinoids speed up skin cell turnover and stimulate collagen. The evidence for texture, fine lines and pigmentation is among the strongest in dermatology.

Over the counter versus prescription

Retinol 0.3–0.5% is a reasonable start. Tretinoin is stronger and requires a prescription; discuss it with a physician or pharmacist.

Timeline

Irritation in weeks one to four, visible change at eight to twelve weeks, full effect at six months.
